WAYFOONG WINNIE

Price Bloodstock moved to within one win of magical 500 in Hong Kong on Wednesday night when Wayfoong Vinnie relished the fast pace of the minimum distance at Happy Valley and swept home impressively to score his second victory.

Wayfoong Vinnie had been a narrow, hard-fought winner over 1,200m at the Valley earlier in the season but slow tempos had not helped him in his last two appearances there over that distance and the master stroke by John Size was the drop back in distance to get more pace over 1,000m.

“He looked more impressive tonight and looked well suited as a 1,000m horse,” Size said. “But the danger with keeping him at that distance would be that he’s going to get back and, if the leaders don’t overdo it like they did tonight, he might struggle to get into the race until it’s all over. Admittedly, he did draw wide and maybe from a better barrier he could stay more in touch but a truly run 1,200m probably suits him better tactically.”

It was Wayfoong Vinnie’s second win in 10 local starts and took him to $1.3 million in stakes with more to come.

“It’s hard to knock what he’s done – he’s been consistent and is doing his job,” Size said.
