TEAM SPIRIT

Price Bloodstock stalwart Team Spirit racked up win number five over the Sha Tin 1200m course on Sunday to maintain a terrific record as a Class 3 money spinner.

The Chris So-trained six-year-old got exactly what he loves when he was able to find the frontrunning role and dictate the pace, despite a wide draw, and it coincided beautifully with a drop back from Class 2 as he has won 4 of his 16 races in Class 3.

French jockey Tony Piccone kept him going and Team Spirit never looked like being headed off.

“This horse is very competitive in Class 3 but I didn’t have a lot of confidence today because of the outside draw,” So said. “But this horse is funny – if he gets to set the pace by himself he can keep kicking. I’m just happy he’s won again – he’s done a good job. Five wins and almost $6 million in stake money is a successful horse.”

So had thought to claim on Team Spirit with an apprentice but, when he was not available, returned to Piccone, who now has two wins from three rides on the gelding.

“I asked Jerry Chau to ride him because of the claim but Tony was the next jockey I asked. He works hard and is a good jockey,” So said. “He rode a really good race – he was patient and kept digging in the run to the line. He knows the horse after winning on him last season and Team Spirit responded.”
