COPARTNER AMBITION

The Price Bloodstock team for the four-year-old races next season in Hong Kong is bursting at the seams after Copartner Ambition signalled he is another potential contender with an impressive maiden victory at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The gelding had caught every eye with a flashing debut second in February then disappointed the second time out when stepped up in distance but trainer Chris So said the mistake had been his own.

“After the first start, when he ran on so strongly, we thought 1,200m was a bit short so we stepped up to 1,400m for the second run and the truth was he just wasn’t ready for it. He didn’t handle it and didn’t finish the race off,” So said.

It was back to the drawing board with the son of Starspangledbanner, and So gave him two months between runs, dropped him back in distance and tinkered with his head gear.

“That’s why we came back to 1,200m and put the cheek pieces on to make him more focused and this was what we were hoping would happen,” the trained explained after the easy success. “He’s got ability – we just didn’t need to push him. I was hoping he would bounce back and he did. As he matures, I think he’ll handle further but the 1200m was right for him today.”

It was a win full of promise for next season and with Price Bloodstock clients already thinking about the Classic Mile with rising stars like Courier Wonder, Fantastic Way, Carroll Street, Master Eight and Drops Of God, Copartner Ambition might measure up to that too as he strengthens up with time.
